The world’s second-largest producer of onions is India. Indian onions are available all year round and known for their pungency.

Indian onions have two crop cycles where the first harvesting runs from November to January and the second harvesting from January to May.

Varieties:

Some of the prominent strains found in India are Agrifound Dark Red, Agrifound Light Red, NHRDF Red, Agrifound White, Agrifound Rose and Agrifound Red, Pusa Ratnar, Pusa Red and Pusa White Round. European countries also get some varieties of yellow onion HD B 536, Tana F1, Arad-H, Suprex (2091), Granex 55, HA 60 and Granex 429 which is suitable for export.

Agrifound Dark Red

Bulbs are dark red,globular round in shape, 4-6 cm in size withtight skin and moderately pungent. Cropmatures in 90-100 days after transplanting. Bulbs contain11-120B total soluble solids, 13-14% dry matter and 10.07 micro mole/g pyruvic acid. The variety gives an averageyield of 300 q/ha. It has been notified by the Govt. of India for growing in kharif season

Agrifound Light Red

Bulbs are attractive light red, globular round in shape with reddish thickinner scales. Crop matures in 110-120 days after transplanting. Keeping quality of bulbs is good. They contain 130B total soluble solids, 14-15%dry matter and12.20 micro mole/gpyruvic acid.The variety gives an average yield of 300-350 q/ha. It has been notified by the Govt. of India for growing in rabi season.

NHRDF-Red

Bulb are attractive dark red, globularround in shape with reddish thick inne rscales. Crop matures in 110-120 days after transplanting. Keeping quality of bulbs is medium. They contain13-140B total soluble solids, 14-15% dry matter and 12.0 micro mole/gpyruvic acid. The variety gives an average yield of250-300 q/ha. Ithas been notified by the Govt. of India for cultivation in Northern, Central and Western India in rabi season.

The bulbs are very attractive light red in colour, globe round in shape with thin neck type bulbs with a diameter of 5.0-6.0 cm. The crop is mature in 100-120 days of transplantation. Keepa quality of bulbs is great. They have13-140B total soluble solid,14-15 %dry matterand 12. 0 micro mole/g pyruvic acid. It is a high-yielding variety and gives an average yield of 350-375 q/ha. Govt. of India for rabi season cultivation in zone III (Delhi,Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat) and Zone VI (Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh).

The bulbs are globular, light bronze, thin neck, 5.5-6.0 cm in diameter. Crops take 120-130 days to mature after transplantation. Quality of bulbs is good. Soluble solids. 12-130B; dry matter. 13-14% and pyruvic acid. 12.50 micro mole/gg. This average-yielding variety gives a yield of 350-400 q/ha. It is recommended for rabi season cultivation in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Bulbs are dark red in colour,globular round in shape with thin neck and 5.5-6.25 cm diameter. It is ready to harvest in 110-120 days after transplantation. For bulbs, keeping quality is good. They have a total soluble solids (TSS) of 12 to 140B, dry matter of 13 to 14 percent and pyruvic acid of 13.0 micro mole/gp. It gives average yield of 350-400 q/ha. Govt. has implemented this in notification dated. for rabi season in zone III (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Imphal) of India.

Agrifound White

The bulbs are cute, white, roundin shape, and covered with tight silvery skin. The crop takes 110-120 days for maturity after transplantation. Storage quality of bulbs is average to fair. They analysed find 4-15 0Btotal soluble solids 15-16% dry matter and 12. 0 micromole / g pyruvic acid and suitable for dehydration. The variety has average yield 250-300 q/ha. In Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan, it has been suggested for a late kharif and for rabi cultivation.

NHRDF Fursungi

Bulbs are red and globose, measuring 5.80–6.25 cm in diameter. 10002666 – Grown in 110-120 days after transplanting. Bulbs store relatively well. They have 12-14 0B total soluble solids and 13-15% dry matter. This resulted in an average yield of 380-400 q/ha. It is toleranttoStemphylium Blight. It has been notified by the Govt. of India for cultivation in Zone-II (Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir & Punjab) & Zone – V (Gujarat &Maharashtra).

The variety gives an average yield of 250-300 q/ha. It has been recommended for growing in kharif season in Cuddapah (AP) and in all thethree seasons in Karnataka.
